31 for 21: This is Fucked Up

Except for The Daily Show and an occasional Everybody Loves Raymond rerun before I go to sleep, I really don’t watch TV.  Therefore, the vast majority of TV shows on nowadays are completely foreign to me.  However, I saw on a friend’s Facebook status today something about a show called The Doctors, and an episode running tomorrow discussing plastic surgery “on Down syndrome children!”  If you go to The Doctors right now, you’ll see a snippet of a preview where someone, I assume a doctor, proclaims, “It would be unfair to judge a parent who was exploring this option, that’s what I believe.”

Unfair, my foot!  This is a new low in a culture obsessed with perfection and appearances.  I’m appalled and disgusted.

I saw a show about a family who decided to have their daughter go through intense physical therapy to make her look more “normal”. I watched it long before Morgan was born and remember being appalled that a family would put their child through so much suffering and pain in hopes of making their child look more like the other children. The mom in the show I saw felt incredible guilt when she first saw her child all wrapped up and swollen from hours of facial cosmetic surgery but then a few months later on the follow up, of course, she was so happy with their decision and really felt like it made a difference for her daughter and fitting in. There was a subtle difference but very subtle. She still looked like a 6 year old girl with Down syndrome.
